Dr. Way’s reminder to wear sunglasses with UV protection to 400 nm (nanometers) or 99% while outdoors
Proper UV protection for your eyes is crucial – not only in the summer but all year round. UV Rays can even penetrate clouds. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection to 400 nm (nanometers) or 99% while outdoors, as recommended by Dr. Way, will help to protect your eyes.
Overexposure to UV rays can lead to cataracts, inflammation of the cornea, macular degeneration, as well as pingueculae and pterygia, which are unsightly growths are the eye surface, which can eventually blur your vision. UV ray exposure can also cause eye cancer. A relatively new sub-specialty of Optometry, geriatric eye care services are provided as an important part of one’s overall health management.
Be careful, because many cheap sunglasses will reduce glare but will not protect you from UV Rays. Check with your optician to make sure your sunglasses give you the protection you need.
